Description
Many people are turned off by running because they start too fast. You should ease into your running program gradually. In our beginners program, we will outline your program starting with walking and jogging and building up gradually to be a quality runner. The idea is to transform you from couch potato to a runner. Our program ideology is to provide you a great social environment and  support so you can achieve your fitness goals.

The group will be lead by NCAA Champion and all-American Bernard Manirakiza.

Bernard won eight national titles while competing in both Track and Field and Cross Country. He added his name to the list of outstanding male middle-distance runners in Abilene Christian University history when he was given the Paul Gold Award signifying his achievements as top male athlete during the 2003-04 school years.

Bernard's training methods will focus on drills, skills, and other running techniques to get you on the right track. Our training also focuses on running form, strength and endurance.

Our program offers nutrition advice, a customized running program, a personal training calendar, local events calendar, and much more to meet your running needs. Whatever your goal is, joining the SpeedyDemons will help reach that goal.

Start Date:  First Monday of each month

Bernard Manirakiza was born in Burundi, a landlocked country in the Great Lakes region of East-Central Africa, bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and south and the ... moreDemocratic Republic of the Congo to the west.

He grew up tending to his family's crops and chasing his family's cows around. The family grew corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans, peas, sorghum and plantain bananas.

As a child, Bernard ran everywhere. Each morning he would run to the valley to get water for his family. He ran or walked to school, three miles away, ran home for lunch, ran back to school for the afternoon classes and ran back home in the evening.

While in middle school and high school, Bernard played soccer with his friends and would challenge them to races. He also loved the long jump and triple jump. He was the District and Regional High School Champion. He found success in the middle distance events in junior high school. Winning his first 800m race gave him the motivation to work harder. Bernard was already a great runner whose goal was to get a scholarship to an American school and get an education.

About

Four years later, in the fall of 2001, Bernard was sitting in the office of head ACU cross country and track and field coach Jon Murray.

A graduate from Abilene Christian University, Bernard won eight national titles while competing in both Track and Field and four times all American in Cross Country. He added his name to the list of outstanding male middle-distance runners in ACU history when he was given the Paul Gold Award signifying his achievements as top male athlete during the 2003-04 school years. In both 2003 and 2004 at the NCAA II Indoor Championships, Bernard finished the mile race with only one shoe after someone stepped on his other shoe at the beginning of the race. He finished sixth in 2003 with a time of 4:05:44, but in 2004, he won the mile race with a time of 4:03.83 and, again, only one shoe!

Bernard is married to his lovely wife Verra Magerano. When not sharing his love of running with his Speedy Demons training group, Bernard spends his time as a shoe-fitting expert at 1379 family Sports.
